SERGEANT KEN CAMERON, CD

MILITARY & LEGION BIOGRAPHY

Ken has a family history of military service. His Uncles Bill Cameron, Charlie Patience, Andy Sugden, Bob Traquair, and his Aunt Jessie Traquair all served in the RCAF during WWII: Uncle Bill Cameron was a pilot who earned the (Distinguished Flying Cross); Uncle Charlie was involved in building the Alaska Highway and the airfield at Watson Lake in the Yukon; and Uncle Andy was an Instrument Tech. His Uncle Bob Pryor was enlisted in the Army, and his Uncle Walter Brown was helpful and instrumental in the forming of the RCEME Corps.

In August 1952, Ken joined the 14 Field Engineers (Militia) in Regina; and on Feb 18, 1953, inspired by the choices made by his uncles, his aunt, and the Veterans he worked with at the CNR, Ken enlisted to go to Korea with the RCEME Corps. However, by the time he completed his basic training in Kingston the Korean War had ended.

As a result of the Canadian Military Unification in 1968, Ken had the privilege of serving in both the Land and Air branches.

PERSONAL HIGHLIGHTS OF KEN’S SERVICE

Ken is very proud of his military service to Canada. He was afforded opportunities to meet and work with wonderful people, travel to interesting places, and experience life in a way that he wouldn’t have had as a civilian.

During his posting in Germany, Ken enjoyed instructing German civilians in mixed curling. While at Downsview, Ken also worked on projects for D.C.I.E.M, Defense & Civilian Institute of Environmental Medicine.

ROYAL CANADIAN AIRFORCE

I served 11 years as an Avionics Technologist, working on a variety of electronic equipment varying from the somewhat simplistic support for the A4 Gunsight of the F86E Sabre Jet to the rather complex equipment of the MG2 Fire Control System in the CF 100 and the CF-104 Starfighter.

I joined the RCAF in the 13th week of 1955, and thus my course # was 5513. I served 3 years in Germany 1956-1959.  My basic training was taken in St. Johns PQ and following that I was transferred to Clinton ON to undertake basic electronics training.

Because of my Service to Canada, I was awarded a medal, a NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) medal by Canada. My wife travelled with me on my several postings in Europe and Canada. On return to Canada my next posting was Camp Borden where I became an instructor.

I then was needed in Cold Lake, AB to learn about, and then instruct the Integrated Electronics System for the CF104 Starfighter.

Branch 239 of the Royal Canadian Legion, right here in Bobcaygeon treats me with a good deal of respect and support in recognition of my Service in the RCAF

I retired in August 1965 and travelled the word with my loving wife Lois.
